Here in Mineola we make instruments available for students to rent directly from our school. We contract out with a local store for a large amount of instruments, which helps us to keep the price low. The price for this year's instrument fee is $75 for each instrument. Third graders start renting their instrument between January-February and fee is $40.
Beginning in 8th grade we encourage students who play violin and viola, flute and clarinet to purchase their own instruments. 8th grade is the point at which we believe students will know if they are going to "stick with it," and it becomes economically advantageous to purchase instead of renting. Additionally, an instrument that you purchase will likely be of higher quality, and make playing much more enjoyable for the student.
We highly discourage purchasing instruments from retailers that do not focus on music or instrument sales. A cheap instrument purchased at a "box store" will be difficult to play, difficult to find parts, and difficult to repair. It will undoubtedly cost more and provide a sub-standard experience for students. Please speak with your music teacher if you have any questions about purchasing an instrument.
