AL This past weekend the Mineola Marching Band took their annual trip to Syracuse to perform their show at the New York State Field Band Conference State Championships held in the Carrier Dome. Capping off one of their best seasons in recent history, they came in first place in their division! This year's music and drill was entirely original, written by one of our own staff members, Ken Kamping with help from Chris Toomey and the rest of the staff. The production was titled A.I.: Artificial Intelligence. You can see a video of their performance here The band has always been a source of pride for our school; it continues to grow and improve and we couldn't be more proud of the nearly 100 students who participate. Every week since September these dedicated students have competed and taken first place in regional competitions, but they have not been on the same field as all of the other bands in the state division until this past weekend. Our students, under the direction of Mr. Toomey, started their rehearsal season last May, worked through the summer, and went away to camp in Pennsylvania for a week. When they returned they engaged in a rigorous schedule of 2 nights a week and usually both weekend days. Each week they would listen to judges critique, and work to make improvements. In week one they received a score of 68.0. This past weekend they finished off with a score of 85.05, beating the second place band by 1.2 points. The spread between first and last place was 10.45 points. Students are rated in music and visual categories meant to be as subjective as possible. Success like this wouldn't be possible without the support of the entire school community: Our Board of Education, Central Administration, High School Administration, Teachers, Students, Parents, Custodians, Clerical, and Bus Drivers. If you're interested in learning more about the band, you can visit the website: https://mineolamarchingband.weebly.com/. Attached are a few photos of the band in Syracuse. Please be sure to congratulate a band member. For the first time since 2009 they are First Place in New York State! Thanks to News12 Long Island for mentioning our story on air! And Thank you to the Mineola Fire Department for a heroes welcome home! Be sure to check out more media coverage! Mineola High School’s Drama Department and Thespian Troupe 276 present The Pajama Game on March 23 and 24. A union strike at a pajama factory generates plenty of steam heat in this toe-tapping comedic love story. The Pajama Game was awarded the 1955 TONY for Best Musical and over half a century later claimed the award for Best Revival of a Musical - proving the story is truly timeless. With an energetic score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross (Damn Yankees), The Pajama Game is brimming with songs and dances that have become musical theatre standards, including "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway". Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful, as sparks fly between new superintendent Sid Sorokin (Jake Lenze) and Babe Williams (Sarah Harty), leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 ½ cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well. Katrine Gulinao also stars as Gladys, the boss’s vivacious secretary and Nathan Bischoff as Hines, a time-study man and Gladys’ eternally jealous boyfriend. Joining them are Robert Shevlin as Mr. Hasler, the cantankerous owner of the SleepTite Pajama Factory, Sarah Carbain as Mabel, the spunky secretary, and Miguel Velasquez as Prez, the Union president and resident lothario. Don’t miss out on this wonderful show from the Golden Age of Broadway! Performances will be Friday, March 23 at 7:30 PM and Saturday, March 24 at 2 PM and 7:30 PM. Tickets are available for $10 (adults) and $5 (students and seniors) on our website at http://www.mineoladrama.com. New for Fall 2017 - We have added a Thursday Matinee Performance! This is to accommodate our colleagues and families who prefer an after school performance. Performance Dates are Thursday 11/16 at 3:15, Friday 11/17 and Saturday 11/18 at 7:30. The Mineola High School Drama Club presents THE CURIOUS SAVAGE under the direction of Matt DeLuca and assistant, Bette Sloane. John Patrick's heartwarming comedy opened in 1950 on Broadway, but its themes of greed vs. goodness and cold-heartedness vs. kindness still ring true in 2017. THE CURIOUS SAVAGE follows the misadventures of Mrs. Ethel P. Savage (Deborah DosSantos). The charitable widow has been left $10,000,000 by her late husband, and has established a fund to help others make their hopes and dreams come true. However, her greedy adult stepchildren Titus (Robert Shevlin), Lily Belle (Katrine Gulinao), and Samantha (Ana Victoria Serna), want the money for themselves. Hoping to bring Mrs. Savage to her senses, the children commit her to The Cloisters, a "sanatorium." There she meets a variety of social misfits who need the kind of help Mrs. Savage can provide. There's the motherly Florence (Jacqueline Letta), the child-like pathological liar Fairy May (Sarah Harty), the shy former military pilot Jeffrey (Jake Lenze), the aspiring but terrible violinist Hannibal (Nathan Bischoff) and the cantankerous seascape painter, Mrs. Paddy (Chloe Katinas). Managing this zany crew are Dr. Emmett (Stephanie Toms) and nurse/administrator Miss Wilhelmina (Sarah Carbain). With the help of her new friends, Mrs. Savage conspires to rid herself of her self-serving stepchildren, leading them on a merry chase and raising the ultimate question of just who the sane people are. THE CURIOUS SAVAGE plays at the Theatre at Mineola High School Thursday, November 16 at 3:00 PM, and Friday (11/17) and Saturday (11/18) nights at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors and are available online; please visit www.mineoladrama.com, and follow the link to purchase tickets. Hymn's achievements have earned him a generous scholarship and a half-page spread in Newsday (date tbd). Earlier today Hymn received his initial recognition at the LIAA Scholar-Artist Kick-off Event, held at Half Hollow Hills High School East. Hymn was recognized alongside 19 other students who won awards for music, art, media studies, and theater. During the 2016-2017 school year, Hymn was a member of the first ever AP Studio in Art that was offered in an online format, taught by Mineola Art Teacher Gina Buongiovanni, through a partnership with Mineola UFSD and Nassau BOCES. In addition, Hymn is developing a vast portfolio of paintings and architectural designs.
